Educational Philosophy

What's Your Genius?

Learning takes places through a variety of channels, I've tried to design my courses with creative assessment options that reflect Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences through individual presentation projects- we each have our own measure of genius, "Gardner theorizes that people do not have just an intellectual capacity, but have many kinds of intelligence, including musical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, bodily-kinesthetic, natural, musical, spatial-visual, and linguistic intelligences." What kind of intelligence do you have?

Literature Based Learning

Charlotte Mason said it best, “Children must have books, living books; the best are not too good for them; anything less than the best is not good enough.” I've designed many of my courses to reflect literature and content which comes designed to uplift, edify and enrich the readers. You can find many such great booklists and resources through the Well Educated Mind, Good and the Beautiful, Simply Charlotte Mason, TJEd and Well Educated Heart. Step it up a notch and be a part of the Great Conversation!

Think Out of the Box!

I agree with Mark Twain, “I have never let schooling get in the way of my own education.” Learning shouldn't come in a nicely packaged box, I prefer wrapping it in the proper mixture of play, good literature, curiosity, discovery and love! Learning doesn't just occur because we are within the walls of an accredited educational facility- I believe curiosity, application, creation and discovery and challenge can more often be nurtured outside of the box! Several years ago, we took advantage of our nomadic lifestyle and went sailing for six months- a challenge for all of us, but it was the best decision we ever made.

Parent Reviews

  • Jamie was a great teacher who had obvious enthusiasm for the subject! We loved the 'multimedia' format and Jamie also added extra resources if there was a topic we were particularly interested in. My daughter, who was very hesitant to take a history class, LOVED it and said "it was awesome and it was easy to understand what to do. Jamie was super nice and made history fun. I felt like I learned a lot!" --- Carone B
  • This was a great class for my 12 year old son (he has dyslexia, ADHD, expressive language disorder and more). It held his attention throughout and he learned a lot along the way. We used audio downloads for the readings which were well narrated and fascinating. It was an inclusive learning environment where my son felt confident enough to do presentations and speak up in a group, which has always been an area of challenge for him. This is the 2nd class we have taken with this teacher, and we would happily take more. Thank you Jamie! ---Raven G
  • My history loving 10 year old really loved this course. Jamie is a very knowledgeable, kind and engaging teacher. Small class size meant that everyone was able to participate and share their thoughts and ideas in each class. As an unschooler my daughter is not so used to having in-depth discussions so that’s another skill this class has helped her develop. The class is also great for connecting with other history loving kids. She’s looking forward to the next course! -- Tina M
